Real-Time Communication over Shared Media Local Area Networks

چکیده
In this paper, we will present a method to enable hard real-time communication with guaranteed quality of service over shared media Ethernet. This method is based on an extension of the standard medium access control by a deterministic token-passing protocol that could also be applied to other network technologies such as HomePNA or Powerline. We show that the assignment of QoSand real-time parameters (data rate & delay) can be done very flexibly and that the timing behavior can be analyzed mathematically and by simulations.

Real-Time Communication Support in IEEE 802.11-Based Wireless Mesh Networks
The IEEE 802.11 family of wireless standards became the dominant solution for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) due to its performance, low cost and fast deployment characteristics (Hartmann & Meister, 2008; Sgora, Vergados, & Chatzimisios, 2009). Along its increasing popularity, there was a demand for interconnection of several different devices in the network, sharing common services. Thus...
متن کاملA Router-Based Congestion Control Scheme For Real-Time Continuous Media*
Many distributed multimedia applications require real-time network communication services to be effective. Although architectural models for real-time communication on the Internet are evolving (e.g., [2]), none appear to consider the problem of realizing real-time performance on existing local-area networks. This is important as the “first” and “last mile” of a network connection — the portion...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of XMPP on the Web
In recent years, the trend to move desktop applications to the Web has posed new requirements for Web applications. One of those requirements is real-time communication, which is an essential feature in a variety of different application domains, such as collaborative working, social networking as well as audio and video conferencing applications. HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), the standar...
متن کاملMass Media vs. the Mass of Media: A Study on the Human Nodes in a Social Network and their Chosen Messages
In Internet-based social networks, the nodes have the most pivotal role in the processes and outcomes of the networks. Whether they pay attention to a message in the network or ignore it defines the fate of the message. One message is shared and re-shared by millions of users and another is left forgotten. The current study tries to shed light on one aspect of the role of the users in a social ...
متن کاملReal-Time Performance Guarantees over Wired/Wireless LANs
Distributed audio and video applications require end-to-end performance guarantees from the underlying networks for smooth delivery of real-time media streams. The end-to-end nature dictates that real-time support be built into both wide-area and local-area networks. With the enormous growth of portable computers equipped with networking capabilities, it is important to develop real-time protoc...
